Frequently asked questions - Sydney
Q. What are the terms and conditions for renting a bike from Sydney?
A. There are specific terms and conditions for the Sydney depot and also general terms & conditions for bike rentals. These can be seen by selecting the 'terms' link for the appropriate bike, or clicking here for the Sydney terms and conditions and here, for the general terms and conditions.
Q. What do the kilometre allowances mean?
A. Unlimited - There is no daily limit for distance travelled, roam as far as you like.
Limited - The daily allowance for travel on these bikes is 250km. Additional distance is charged at 25 cents per kilometre.
High KM - All these vehicles are still subject to strict safety and maintenance standards, they've simply travelled a bit further than the rest of the fleet.
Q. Where is the depot, what's the easiest way to get to it and can I collect from the airport?
A. The depot is located in Annandale 5 - 10 minutes from the city centre and about AU$15 in a taxi. The airport is 20 - 25 minutes and approximately AU$45 in a taxi. Airport collections / drop offs are not available I'm afraid. If flying long distance we recommend you have a night's rest before collecting the bike.
Q. Can I leave luggage at the depot during my trip and / or what if I need to ship it to another city?
A. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the depot during your trip and there is no charge. We'd be pleased to arrange shipping to another depot if you are finishing in another city. Charges are at our cost price.
Q. What are the depot opening hours?
A. Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm. Sunday is by appointment only and between 9-10am and 4-5pm.
Q. Can I rent a helmet and riding equipment?
A. Good quality helmets & gloves are included free for the rider, textile jackets, trousers and boots can all be rented but if you are on a longer trip it is often more comfortable to bring your own equipment. No guarantees are made for riding gear and it is rented at your own risk. Prices can be seen on the Sydney rental page.
Q. What is the security bond and insurance excess?
A. The security bond is processed on your credit card and refunded upon safe return of the undamaged bike. The insurance excess is the most you would have to pay in the event of an accident. If the damage is only AU$100, for example, then that's all you pay but if the damage is AU$6,000 and the excess is AU$4,000 you would be liable for AU$4,000 and the insurance pays the remainder. You can reduce the excess by half for AU$20 per day.
Q. What license do I need and what else should I bring when collecting the bike?
A. For large capacity bikes you will need a full bike licence written in English. If it is not in English you will need an International Drivers Permit. For small capacity bikes and scooters your home country license must allow you to ride the size of bike you are renting. You will also need your passport if from overseas and a VISA or Mastercard for the rental payment and security deposit. Don't forget to bring the booking confirmation with the address and telephone number of the depot so you can find it when you arrive!
Q. Can I rent a Sat-nav for my trip?
A. Yes, see costs detailed above.
Q. Are locks supplied?
A. Yes. A lock is supplied and should be used every time you leave the bike.
Q. Will my mobile phone work in Australia and will I be able to get a signal?
A. Check with your phone company to see if they can turn on roaming allowing you to use your phone in Australia. It may be cheaper to buy a SIM card for your phone here (mobile phone shops are everywhere and SIM cards start at about AU$20). Mobile phones obtain a signal in almost all towns and cities, but outside built up areas reception can be patchy. In most outback regions it can be many hundreds of kilometres between towns and there will most likely be no signal at all in these areas.
Q. What happens if I break down?
A. The depot will provide you with a National Breakdown recovery number, but you should first try and talk to the depot in case it is something simple they can fix over the phone. The best solution to a serious problem depends on where you are and what the problem is. The depot will do everything they can to get you moving again and this is usually within 24 hours. It may involve a repair, replacement bike or alternative transport but the priority is to allow you to continue your trip. Specific terms and conditions apply to self guided tours including accommodation, which can be found on the relevant tour section of this site.
Q. Are there toll roads in Sydney?
A. Sydney motorways, the Harbour Bridge and tunnels are toll roads. Most have cash booths but some don't. You will be given a sheet explaining this when you collect the bike and if you expect to ride on motorways you will need to ensure tolls are paid. Please be aware that unpaid toll fines are charged to your credit card with a $20 administration fee.
