The 'Best of the West' tour - Darwin to Perth (or vice versa)
The
western part of Australia is still untouched by tourism on a large
scale. It is only recently that highlights like the incredible
Bungle Bungle National Park have been made accessible to the modern
traveler.
The magnificent Kimberleys and the Karijini National Park are
still waiting to be discovered by the tourist industry and many
beautiful beaches in Broome and along the west coast are only
known to the locals.
The "Best of the West" covers all these magnificent
and spectacular destinations in Western Australia.
The tour stretches 4,900km, including 300km gravel road, which
is easily done by the average experienced bike rider.
We start the tour in tropical Darwin, one of the best places to
tune yourself into a holiday mood. We do some sightseeing of the
city, watch the crocodiles, or just enjoy one of the beaches near
the city.
After we visit the Northern Territory Wildlife Park, our first
camp will be in Litchfield National Park at Wangi Falls. This
has a beautiful waterfall with a fantastic plunge pool for swimming.

The
next night will see us at Katherine Gorge National Park, at Edith
Falls. This is another outback paradise with a swimming hole and
waterfall.
We then head west and cross into Western Australia. After a bush
camp we reach Kununurra where we organise a boat trip on the Ord
river and a scenic flight over the amazing Bungle Bungles.
On our way to the coast we travel through the southern part of
the Kimberleys, with the classically Australian rugged red rocky
scenery of the magnificent Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana
Gorge.
We spend a day in Broome at the spectacular Cable Beach and enjoy
the nightlife of this small resort town that used to survive by
pearl diving.
Next we follow the coast and turn inland just north of Port Headland.
We visit Karijini National Park and a number of beautiful gorges
with idyllic billabongs and waterfalls.
In Kalgoorlie we get a bit of a taste of the goldrush days in
the old "Wild West". The mines are still working and
it is said, that in some pubs you can still pay your bill in nuggets.
On our last leg to Perth we pass Wave Rock, an amazingly shaped
rock formation.
Perth, nestled between the Swan River and the Indian Ocean, is
our final destination. We party in Fremantle to celebrate an exciting
and rewarding tour: "The Best of the West."
